The battle for the lowest cost 32-bit MCU is on

TI is doubling down on the low cost MCU segment with 25 more products in the sub Dollar range, going down to $0.38/1ku in its MSPM0 family of products. This is heating the battle with ST who had announced earlier this year its lowest cost Cortex-M family, the STM32C0. Given TI’s chosen product naming convention, there is more room to go down in features/memory.

Infineon
Infineon added a handful of variants to existing products in the PSoC 4 family.
Microchip
This month, Microchip added 300 parts. DSPIC33CK flash size is bumped to 1MB while new package variants and Flash sizes were introduced for the AVR, ATTiny and PIC16/18.
Nordic
No change.
Nuvoton
Novoton introduced the M091 series, a 32-bit microcontroller designed for analog sensor applications. It offers a range of analog peripherals, including OpAmp, DAC and ADC. It is based on a 72MHz Cortex-M0 core, provides numerous peripherals such as timers, UART, SPI, I²C, PWM, and PDMA . 4 parts were announced.
NXP
NXP announced the LPC86x, a cost-effective 60 MHz Cortex-M0+ MCU with up to 64KB of Flash and 8 KB SRAM. The peripheral complement of the LPC86x includes a CRC engine, I2C-bus interface, I3C-bus interface, up to three USARTs, two SPI interface, one multi-rate timer, self-wake-up timer, two FlexTimer with hardware dead-time insertion and quadrature decoding, one 12-bit ADC, one analog comparator, function-configurable I/O ports through a switch matrix, an input pattern match engine and up to 54 general-purpose I/O pins.
No price is available yet.
Renesas
Renesas added in the RX family, the RX26T Group. The RX26T MCUs are 120 MHz, RXv3-based, 5V-compatible products with dual-motor control using Field Oriented Control (FOC) and Power Factor Correction (PFC) control on a single chip.
The timer functions support 120MHz PWM (3-phase complementary x 2 channels + single-phase complementary x 2 channels), and analog function is provided by 12-bit A/D converter x 3 units (2 units with a 3-channel simultaneous sample & hold circuit). It offers CAN-FD for high-speed inter-device communication and I3C Basic for high-speed communication with sensors which enable faster data transfers.Trusted Secure IP-Lite with its integrated key management function and cryptographic engine reduces the risk of information leaks from the system.
240 products were added.
SiliconLabs
no change.
ST Microelectronics
ST continues its pause this month after a frenetic beginning of the year when it overhauled its STM porfolio of MCUs with the retirement (NRND) of virtually all of its STM8 parts. This is the result of the STM32C0 announcement a couple of months ago of their lowest cost 32 MCU that cannibalized the STM8. This is a bold move that allows customers to upgrade easily to a slew of options in the STM32 portfolio.
Texas Instruments
TI added 25 MSPM0L products in the MSPM0 family. These are ultra low cost Cortex-M0+ running at 32 MHz. The portfolio starts at $0.38/1ku with 16kB/2kB of Flash/RAM, 2 UART, 2 I2C, 1 SPI and a temperature range of -40 to 125C (MSPM0L1304TD). This is a serious competitor to STM32C0 family whose lowest cost MCU is the STM32C011J4M6 at $0.4313/10k. The battle for the low-costest Cortex-M is on.
